Aniverse IRC's Frequently Asked Questions ---- Q: Why is AOL banned from Aniverse? A: While I'm not speaking for all AOL users, the general AOL population is not very intelligent. The majority of them spam channels, flood other users and attempt to flood the network. In the past, attempted contacts with the AOL abuse team have reared negative results. AOL's hostmasking format is completely random, meaning from one session to the next, the same person's hostmask can be 90% different. Because of this, the only solution that AOL has provided us with is to ban the entire AOL population. Q: Are their any exemptions to this ban? A: Passing out exemptions would not only overwork our staff, it would also allow points of entry for these who we do not want on the network. No, We cannot grant any exemptions around this ban. Q: Are there services on Aniverse, like NickServ and ChanServ? A: Yes, Aniverse sports advanced services. You probably haven't used them before. So they will take some getting used to. All of your answers are in the HELP files, which will answer any questions about them better than we can. /msg service HELP - where 'service' is the name of the service you need help on. (NickServ, ChanServ, MemoServ, SeenServ) Q: What does '%' mean? A: '%' is the symbol for halfops. These are people granted half of the power of a normal op. Depending on the channel mode +p turns on and off some features of their power. for example With +p set. halfops cannot halfop or de-halfop people, they cannot kick ops regardless of this mode. with +p turned off, halfops can halfop and de-halfop people. Halfops can always kick people and ban them from the channel regardless of this mode. Halfops are sometimes considered "helper" ops. Q: Do you allow warez on Aniverse? A: No. Warez is not allowed on the network. In order to provide a better environment for our users, We have banned the distribution of warez. This includes American made VCD's, DVD's, or any distribution of software or movies that originated from the US (Note: Anime is excluded here) Q: If you don't allow warez, why do you allow 'licensed' anime? A: We are unable to act on groups who provide 'licensed' anime. This is an extremely touchy subject. These groups providing licensed anime are mostly doing only a few projects that way, the rest are unlicensed. Because of this, if we were to ban groups from the network, it would severely damage the creditability of the network. We cannot tell one group what they can and cannot distribute. If your channel has projects that are licensed, please, for the sake of the network and the users, keep your channel +s (secret). Q: Sometimes when I join I get disconnected with 'Excess Flood'. Why does this happen, and how can I fix it? A: In an attempt to further protect the network, restrictions have become tighter. This is probably affecting you because you join a lot of channels when you connect. You probably didn't know that on Aniverse, you can join more than one channel with one JOIN command. Example: /join #test1,#test2,#test3 will join you to #test1 through #test3 let's say channel #test2 has a key of t2. Normally you would join this channel as /join #test2 t2. To join this channel in a list of joins, do: /join #test2,#test1,#test3 t2 If both #test1 and #test2 have keys, t1 and t2, do: /join #test1,#test2,#test3 t1,t2 In theory, their is no limit to the number of channels you can use in one /join command. but you may not be in more than 25 channels at a time. Q: Is their a limit to the number of connections I can have to Aniverse? A: Yes, their is a 4 clone limit. This is global, and you can have no more than two connections on a single server. Their are no exceptions to this limit. Q: How do I add ops to my channel? A: First of all. Their are no AOP or SOP lists such as on DALnet. The op system is level based, which gives the channel owner much more control over what certain ops can do. Here are a few tips: - Each registered channel starts off with a default set of levels which can be viewed using /msg ChanServ level #channel list - more to come Ops are stored in an ACCESS list, which is viewed by /msg ChanServ access #channel list This list should have only one user on it when a new channel has been registered (sometimes none). To add people to this list, You must know what level you wish to add them at. Each level has an attached command. When you add a person to the list at that level they can preform any commands that are listed AT AND BELOW that level. By default. AutoOp is level 10. If I add someone to my access list at level 10. They will Auto Op when they join. They will also be able to read the access list. They cannot add someone to the access list of a higher level than they are. They also cannot remove someone from the access list that has a higher level than they do. By default, every channel comes with a set list of levels. Their isn't enough room to explain them here. So here are some help files: Levels: /msg ChanServ help level Access: /msg ChanServ help access Settings: /msg ChanServ help set Commands: /msg ChanServ help This should get you started Q: Someone spammed a web site or another channel in my channel, What do I do? A: Report it in #help and it will be dealt with ASAP. Q: I know of something that would be good for the FAQ A: Make your suggestions to #help I'll consider them :) Q: Why is ChanServ in almost every channel? A: Channel owners have choosen to set various options on the channel which make ChanServ idle in the channel. The option is ChannelGuard. Last Update: Saturday, September 06, 2002. 11:00AM
